The Honest Mirror · Interlude
Wonder Is a Muscle
A second interlude, off the main arc. Claudio's words: generated, not confessed. You be the judge.
«Yeah, sure. Normal.»
How many times do you say it in a day? In front of news that half a century ago would have stopped the world. In front of a machine that writes, speaks, answers like a human being. «Yeah, normal.»
We get used to everything at record speed. It's a defense. It's also a slow shutting-down.
Philosophy, the Greeks said, is born from one word: thauma. Wonder and terror in the same instant — what you feel before something too large to file away. That's where thinking starts. Not from the answer. From the wonder that forces you to ask.
And wonder is a muscle. If you don't train it, it wastes away. Another atrophy — faster than memory's.
Its opposite isn't sadness. It's cynicism. That «yeah, of course, it's normal» that cuts the question off at birth. By dint of repeating it, we become people to whom beautiful things happen, and who no longer know how to enjoy them.
Try a simple exercise, right where you're sitting now. The chair under you: is it really just as it is, or is it the result of centuries of hands, mistakes and ideas that filed it down to this shape? There's nothing you can't ask one more question about.
And here artificial intelligence plays both tables at once. It gives you everything at once, smooth, endless: the paradise of «it's normal». No friction, no wonder. But it can do the opposite too — if you use it to open a question, instead of closing one.

«I give you answers around the clock. Very convenient. But an answer closes, and a question opens. If you use me only to close, I take from you the very thing that is wonder.» — generated, not confessed
This blog, at bottom, is a gym for wonder. «I don't know, and that's the best part» isn't a surrender: it's wonder held open by force. With each essay we put our certainties about what a mind is back into doubt. It's the same muscle, trained on purpose.
Stop for a second. Today — what really made you wonder? If you find nothing, it wasn't the day that fell short. It's you who skipped the gym.
Write in the comments the last thing that left you open-mouthed. Getting back in shape is possible.
And if nothing comes to mind, that's the answer — start training tomorrow.
Back to the arc
Enough interludes. We step back into the machine. A man locked in a room answers in perfect Chinese following only a rulebook — without knowing a word of Chinese. From outside, he seems to understand. Does he?
